Paints

I prefer tube paints and use DaVinci, Windsor Newton, M. Graham and Co., and Holbein, depending on the color; all are great brands. The biggest thing is to avoid purchasing pigments with the word “hue” after them (i.e. Cadmium Red Hue). Likewise, avoid Windsor Newton Cotman paints.

  • Yellow Ochre, Quinacridone Gold, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Cadmium Red Light, Permanent Rose (or) Alizarin Crimson (or) Quinacridone Magenta, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Turquoise, Phthalo Green, Ultramarine Violet

  • White Gouache

Palette / Easel

My preferred palette is the John Pike Palette.

Mabef brand of easels are great. I use their field easel for plein air painting.

You will also need some kind of drawing board with a clip, no larger than 12x18. I have often used a piece of foamcore with a binder clip and that works fine.

Paper

I use Arches or Fabriano Cold Press Watercolor Paper, 120lb, in 22x30” sheets, which then can be torn down. Paper will be available for you to purchase by the sheet during class if you wish. It’s usually less expensive to buy it in a 10-pack.

Brushes

I use both Kolinsky Sable watercolor brushes and also Princeton Aqua Elite. I also have a cheap china brush that I swear by. The more you paint, you’ll find what works best for you. Just make sure for my classes that you have a variety of sizes — one for big washes, some medium-sized rounds and flats, and a couple of small detail brushes.

Other

Please have a No. 2 pencil and a kneaded rubber eraser or a white Staedler eraser, paper towels or a cotton towel, and a water vessel

Optional: Gum arabic
